Rescue Lent Series + The Lamb

The Rescue. A Worship Series for the Sundays in Lent

The rescue plan was all drawn up. They had reviewed the mission and thought through the steps. It was now or never. Time to free their loved ones from the clutches of evil. The rescue is the story of our salvation. Humans tend to look for rescue apart from God, in themselves, in politicians, in money, or control. But we could never save ourselves. During the season of Lent, we see the ultimate rescue plan come together so beautifully as the Rescuer marches to the cross to achieve our salvation. This wasn’t a secret plan. This exemplifies who God is. Our God is a God who rescues his people. The plan didn’t just come together overnight either. From the time mankind fell into sin and the control of the enemy, God laid out the plans to rescue his dearly loved children.

This Lenten season, we’ll see the Rescuer at work in the Old Testament. The enemy wields his influence in a variety of ways; through the power and arrogance of a towering giant, by manipulating rebellious people, as he guides a stubborn pharaoh, but God provides rescue. We’ll see young David rely on the Lord to take down Goliath with sling and stone, and we’ll reflect on the Son of David who would go on to defeat Satan himself. We will remember that God uses his Word and his servants to guide us to repentance as a primary tactic in the rescue plan. We’ll see God call out to Moses from the burning bush, giving him assurance that he is able to join in the rescue operation because, “I will be with you.” We’ll watch as the Red Sea parts and the Israelites cross on dry land as they escape Egypt. What a rescue. We’ll praise God that he rescued us personally. With joy, we’ll confess, “Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid.”

Throughout history and ultimately at the cross and the empty tomb, Christ was rescuing his people. Through Lent, our Sunday worship series takes a look at God’s rescue plan for us. As we look at the Old Testament readings, we see rescue with a personal perspective, and rescue on grand scales.
